Best software for a small electrical business (2026)
Electrical contracting mixes quick service calls with jobs that sit open for weeks waiting on a permit or an inspection. A small electrical business needs software that keeps those open jobs visible, so a panel upgrade waiting on the inspector doesn't get forgotten while the next service call is booked.

Permits and inspections keep electrical jobs open
Panel upgrades, new circuits, EV charger installs and service changes often need a permit and an inspection before the job is truly done. For a small shop that means jobs with several visits, a status that isn't simply 'scheduled' or 'invoiced', and permit numbers and inspection dates that someone has to track.
Electricians also quote a lot of work that never happens, so the speed of sending a clean estimate matters. Being able to send it, follow up and convert it into a job without retyping is where a job app pays for itself.
Small electrical contractors often split their week between residential service and a few builder or commercial customers who pay on terms. That makes invoicing and follow-up on unpaid invoices just as important as scheduling, which is why the quiz asks what you already use for the books.
What to test in a free trial
- Create a panel-upgrade job with two visits (rough-in and final) plus a note for the permit number, and see how it shows on the schedule.
- Send an estimate from your phone and check how the customer approves it and whether it turns into a job without retyping.
- Look for a custom field or job status you can use for 'waiting on inspection'.
- Send a progress invoice for part of a job and check how the remaining balance shows up.
Common electrical software mistakes
- Closing a job as done before the final inspection passes, then forgetting to go back.
- Typing the same estimate twice: once to send it and once to turn it into a job.
- Keeping permit numbers in a notebook instead of on the job record.

Electrical software FAQ
What is the best software for a small electrical business?
For a solo electrician, the quiz picks Jobber ($49/mo) and Jobber AI Receptionist add-on ($29/mo). A solo electrician needs quick estimates, a schedule that holds multi-visit permitted jobs, and someone to catch calls while you're in a panel. For a 2–5 person electrical crew it picks Kickserv ($60/mo) and Rosie ($49/mo). With a small crew, the extra need is seeing every open job, including the ones waiting on an inspection, across two to five people. (Quiz defaults; prices checked Oct 17, 2026.)
Can job software track electrical permits and inspections?
We have not verified permit-tracking features for any tool we track, so check it in a trial. A practical setup in any job app is a custom field or note for the permit number, a separate visit for each inspection, and a job status that shows the job is waiting on the inspector.
Do electricians need estimating software as well as a job app?
For service work and small installs, the estimates built into a job app are usually enough. Bigger new-construction or commercial bids with long material takeoffs are where separate estimating tools come in, and that is outside what the quiz covers for small shops.
What if my electrical crew or customers need Spanish?
The job app becomes Housecall Pro. Housecall Pro says: app and support in English and Spanish. Rosie says: english & Spanish on every call.
