Which Tool for the Job

About & methodology

Which Tool for the Job helps owners of small trade businesses (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, cleaning, landscaping and more) pick software without wading through sales calls.

How we collect prices

How the quiz picks tools

The quiz uses simple, published rules: free options first. Then one core system for running jobs, matched to your trade and crew size. Then one tool aimed at your biggest headache, plus books/payroll if needed. Monthly totals use list prices for the number of people you chose. Where a price isn't published, it's left out of the total and flagged. "Crew size fit" and "trades it suits" are our editorial judgment based on each vendor's positioning.

Affiliate disclosure

This site contains some affiliate links. If you click one and buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Pages with affiliate links say so at the top, and affiliate links are marked as sponsored in the page code.

Current affiliate partners: Rosie (AI answering). We've applied to other programs, and we'll keep this list current as they're approved.

Picks never depend on commissions. The quiz rules and rankings are the same whether or not a vendor pays us. Tools with no affiliate program at all (like the free Google Business Profile, Wave, or free AI tiers) are recommended whenever they fit. If a partner offers our readers a discount, we show it next to the link only as the vendor describes it.
