Privacy policy
Tools for the Trade collects very little. There are no accounts, no ad trackers, and nothing to sign up for unless you want the newsletter. This page lists everything the site collects and who handles it.
Effective
Summary
- Your quiz answers are worked out in your browser. We don't store them.
- Visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies.
- If you join the newsletter, your email is stored by Kit, and you can unsubscribe in one click.
- We never sell, rent or share your personal information.
What we collect
Newsletter sign-ups (Kit)
If you sign up for The Toolbox Report, the email address you type is sent to Kit (formerly ConvertKit), the email service we use. Kit stores it, asks you to confirm it, and sends the newsletter. Like any web service, Kit's servers also see technical details of the request, such as your IP address. We use your email only to send the newsletter. See Kit's privacy policy.
Hosting and visit counts (Cloudflare)
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, so Cloudflare processes each request (including your IP address) to deliver pages and protect the site. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which Cloudflare says works without cookies or local storage and doesn't fingerprint visitors. We see totals such as page views, pages visited, referring sites and countries, not who you are. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Outbound clicks
Vendor buttons go through a short page at /go/<tool>/ before forwarding you to the vendor. Web Analytics counts a visit to that page like any other page view, which tells us how many people clicked through to each vendor. Nothing about you is attached. Once you're on the vendor's site, its own privacy policy applies, and for affiliate links the vendor or its affiliate network may set its own cookies to credit the referral (see our disclosure).
Quiz answers
When you finish the quiz, your six answers (trade, crew size, budget, current software, biggest headache, Spanish) are put into the address of the results page, and the picks are worked out by code running in your browser. We don't have a database and don't save your answers. Because they're in the page address, they travel with the page request like any web address, and anyone you share the link with can see them. The quiz never asks for your name, email or phone number.
Emails you send us
If you email support.toolsforthetrade@gmail.com, we use your message and address only to reply and, for corrections, to fix the page.
Content from other sites
A few images load from other servers, which see the request like any website: the "As seen on" badges in the footer come from the directories that list us, and the What's new page shows video thumbnails from YouTube and press images from vendors' announcements. Videos load from YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) only after you press play.
Cookies
Tools for the Trade doesn't set any cookies of its own and doesn't use advertising or tracking cookies. Third parties you choose to visit or play (a vendor's site, a YouTube video) may set their own.
What we don't do
